Rajagriha, 28 May 2023: In a brief reshuffle of the governors of the states, Rashtradhyaksh His Illustrious and Royal Dhrubajyoti Roy appointed new governors for the two southern states of Beltola and Basistha. In a release from the Rashtra Niwas, it read that the Rashtradhyaksh accepted the resignation of His Serene Highness Prince Abhiraj as the Governor of Beltola. The reason behind his resignation is not public, but it is widely expected that the prince will be appointed to some senior position in the royalty.
The Rashtradhyaksh appointed Princess Bishakha, his maternal first cousin, also serving as the Governor of Basistha to be the Governor of Beltola for the remainder of her tenure. On the other hand, he appointed former Beltola Governor and former union minister Bhargab Jyoti Medhi who has been the Mayor of Dadara since late March this year as the Governor of Basistha succeeding Princess Bishakha.
Both Prince Abhiraj and Princess Bishakha were appointed as governors, along with the other holders of the offices, on 17 March 2023 following the grant of royal assent to the Governorship Bill of 2023. The newly appointed Basistha governor Bhargab Jyoti Medhi is a senior politician and has served as a cabinet minister at the union under several prime ministers, holding numerous important portfolios including law, parliamentary affairs, education, minority affairs, etc. He has also been the Governor of Beltola, Uttaranchal and the Governor-General of Purvanchal.
