PDP Chairman Amir Abbas Arya'i named new Prime Minister; appoints new cabinet

Rajagriha, 16 August 2026: People's Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman and seasoned politician Singhasri Amir Abbas Arya'i, Duke of Mahvar, was appointed the country's ninth Prime Minister on 1st August 2026 by Rashtradhyaksh Varuna Sriraya to succeed Singhasri Maahir Samarth, Duke of Nowpeshia, who has been in office since 2nd March 2025.

Arya'i, who served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Educaiton, Science and Technology, and the Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, became the first non-Congress prime minister since 2019. He emerged as the sole contender for the top post after Rashtradhyaksh Varuna Sriraya sought the resignation of Prime Minister Maahir Samarth around mid-July this year. After seeking Samarth's resignation citing his failure to enhance government productivity and efficiency, the Rashtradhyaksh offered Arya'i to serve as his government's leader, an offer that Arya'i had graciously accepted.

Arya'i, who heads the People's Democratic Party since its foundation in April this year, was formally appointed as the country's head of government on 1st August 2026, and formed a coalition government with the National People's Congress still commanding a majority. While the Lok Sabha has not been dissolved yet, it remains dysfunctional since the last election in May 2025. According to the Prime Minister, the cabinet formed shall serve purely on a caretaker basis until the next general election, which is widely speculated to occur before the annual autumnal holidays.

The cabinet headed by Arya'i retained most of the ministers from his predecessor's cabinet, yet made several major to minor changes in the portfolio allocation. In a surprising move, outgoing prime minister Maahir Samarth was appointed as a Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. He was also accorded precedence above the Deputy Prime Minister.

Arya'i retained Princess Tanvi as the Deputy Prime Minister and appointed her as the Minister of Urban Development and Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Senior Minister Singhasri Suryadeva Kapei retained his charge as the Minister of Defence. Singhasri Raghav Deka, who served as Senior Minister in the outgoing government, lost his position as Senior Minister and was appointed as a cabinet minister.

Among the cabinet ministers, Aryasri Maha Sri Dr Rayan Hussain was retained as the Minister of Health and Human Welfare; Singhasri Raghav Deka was appointed the Minister of Finance and Minister of National Planning; Aryasri Maha Paduka Sri Praneet Singh was appointed the Minister of Home Affairs; Aryasri Maha Sri Indra Vikrant Deka was retained as the Minister of Local Government, Regional Development and Co-operatives; Aryasri Maha Sri Uttama Shanvika Roy was appointed the Minister of National Integration and Official Languages and Minister of Women and Equalities; Paramsri Maha Sri Surya Harlong Terang was retained as the Minister of Energy, Minerals and Water Resources; and Paramsri Maha Uttama Iftikar Ahmed was also retained as the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. Two ministers were promoted to cabinet ministers, including Padmasri Tushar Deka, who was appointed the Minister of Agriculture and Food Production, and Paramsri Maha Uttama Razia Sultana, who was appointed the Minister of Minority Affairs. The Prime Minister retained the charge as the Minister of Education, Science and Technology and assumed additional charge as the Minister of Information and Public Relations. Aryasri Uttama Sri Dinesh Rajagopalan, who served as the Minister of Youth and Sports and Minister of National Integration and Official Languages in the outgoing government, was dropped from the new cabinet.

Somyodeep Sircar, Paramsri Maha Uttama Parishmita Das, and Debika Deka Pator Sarma were retained as Minister of State (Independent Charge). Sircar was appointed Minister for Youth and Sports and Minister of State for Finance; Das was reappointed Minister for Environment, Forests and Wildlife Resources and was assigned the charge as Minister of State for Urban Development; and Sarma was reappointed Minister for Tourism and Minister of State for Culture and National Heritage.

The Ministers of State included Maha Indra Nida Fatima, Fardeen Ahmed, Hanif Ali Palowan, Rahul Singh, and Abhijeet Sen. Fardeen Ahmed lost his independent berth while Abhijeet Sen was the only fresh entrant in the cabinet. Fatima was retained as Minister of State for Home Affairs and assigned the additional charge as Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment; Fardeen Ahmed was retained as Minister of State for Defence with additional charge as Minister of State for Health and Human Welfare; Hanif Ali Palowan was appointed Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Energy, Minerals and Water Resources; Rahul Singh was appointed Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Production and also retained his charge as Minister of State for Local Government, Regional Development and Co-operatives; and Abhijeet Sen was appointed as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Information and Public Relations; and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office.

Prime Minister Arya'i also made a bureaucratic reshuffle immediately after assuming office. He appointed Foreign Secretary Maha Indra Luke Wellmoore as the Cabinet Secretary and Secretary to the Prime Minister. Outgoing Cabinet Secretary Luo Yiming was named Foreign Secretary; meanwhile, Shane Torres was appointed Defence Secretary.

The Prime Minister also coordinated among all the ministers and launched the policy of his government. His immediate plans include revitalising the Lok Sabha and conducting the general election at the earliest, improving Vishwamitra's foreign image, stronger coalition-building among states, reorganising the defence force, etc.
