11 May 2022, Rajagriha: Political newcomer and Consul-General in Somerset, Rafe Burfield won the by-election to parliamentary constituency 16-Chandril of the state of Kamrupa defeating strongman and former deputy premier Liam Alexander. Burfield won received 50% of the total votes polled was declared as the winner of the by-election by the Election Commission headed by Rashtradhyaksh Dhrubajyoti Roy. The polling was held yesterday, the 9th May.
The other two candidates- Liam Alexander received 37.5% of the votes while Manggala Alif Prasetia received 12.5% of the votes. The defeat of Liam Alexander in the by-election is also his second consecutive defeat in any by-poll.
The by-election to the Chandril seat was held to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of General Arturo E. Lara in February 2022 following his temporary hiatus. He had earlier served as the Chief of the Defence Staff and later joined the union cabinet to serve as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Health and Family Welfare.
Following Burfield's election to the parliament, it is widely believed that he would be inducted into the union cabinet. Meanwhile, Speaker Tyler Mullins who was supposed to be replaced by Alexander, is supposed to continue in his post for a longer period.
