Opinion: Attack ideas, not persons - a serious proposal to both sides of the political aisle

BY JAYDEN DAGSA, PRESIDENT OF THE PRIVY COUNCIL

As Vishwamitran politics returns, the revived National People's Congress and the Vishwamitran National Party have began to clash, not only in questions about policy and government agenda, but also on the themes of "representation", with the VNP always signalling their eagerness to represent the people, dismissing the NPC as simply power-grabbing and authoritarian. Though this isn't the first time we have seen this type of politics (remember the Green Socialist Party?), this vile logical fallacy of "ad hominem" continues to dominate political discussion in the state. I now make my serious proposal to both sides of the aisle: attack ideas and not persons.

It is, quite frankly, disgusting that we even have this kind of politics in Vishwamitra, and even the world. Have we all not forgotten the incipit of our anthem, "Peace is our goal; it is and will always be"? To the NPC: your long and proud history of big-tent politics surely should have made you mature enough to end the ages-old practice of mudslinging, right? And to the VNP: I understand that the NPC has been ruling for many years, but do not assume without evidence that it is an authoritarianist party which undermines the freedoms of the people, please! Your use of assumptions as ammunition for political artillery is simply not apt for the dignity and honor of representing the people of this nation.

Why is it better to attack ideas? First of all, it fosters civil discussion on what the desires of the people are, and in attacking ideas we can find much better solutions to problems that are present in our society today. Furthermore, as we improve our solutions to problems, we will eventually find the best solution to the problem we face, which will help us answer the other problems, and so on and so forth, creating a domino effect of solving problem after problem after problem. This will ultimately benefit us more than political warfare.

In summary, both sides of the political aisle must not follow the paths taken by macronations of yore, but forge paths anew that lead to a united society, a nation united by the principles it was founded on, and a people united in their objective to leave a better country for the next generation of Vishwamitrans.
