Gheorghe Stefan named Caretaker Prime Minister; forms interim council of ministers

Following the election notification being effective since yesterday; incumbent Prime Minister Princess Anoushkaa along with members of her council of ministers tendered resignation addressed to the Rashtradhyaksh which was accepted by him and the Rashtra Niwas (The Royal Palace) announced:


His Majesty The Rashtradhyaksh has accepted the resignation of Her Royal Highness Princess Anoushkaa and her council of ministers with immediate effect.

His Majesty The Rashtradhyaksh then appointed Gheorghe Stefan Marius, who was serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations in the outgoing council of ministers under Princess Anoushkaa was appointed as the Caretaker Prime Minister of the nation and shall lead the nation into the period of free and fair elections to be held on 27 and 28 February 2021.


Alongside the caretaker Prime Minister, Liam Munroe was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister, however he resigned from his position within hours of being appointed to the office.


The Rashtradhyaksh further appointed six individuals to the position of Cabinet Ministers; while three were appointed as Ministers of State. Those appointed as cabinet ministers included David Augustus, Thomas Bainbridge, Arnab Deka, Matthew Xia, Prince Manoj & Princess Bishakha; whereas those appointed as Ministers of State include Farhaz Hazarika, Daniel Lee and Tusharjit Deka.


Following the resignation of Munroe as the Deputy Prime Minister; Defence Minister David Augustus was appointed to the position to fill in the vacancy created by the resignation.


The tradition of caretaker government was introduced by then President Dhrubajyoti Roy in March 2020, when then Prime Minister Tanishkaa Patranabish resigned from office to ensure an all-party government to assume office to observe and oversee free and fair elections in the nation; with the current caretaker government assuming charge, it became the second such government to be formed in the nation.


General elections shall take place in the nation on 27 and 28 February in order to elect members to the 14th Parliament.
